Topic Research

The topic I will be exploring is Hidmbi.
Just to recap, here is my summary from last week's topic brainstorm:

Hidimbi acts as bait for her rakshasha brother's potential meals. While trying to lure a man into her brother's trap, Hidimbi falls in love with him. Here I will elaborate on the story of how she has to make the hard choice of choosing loyalty to her brother over love for the man she wants to save. In a turn of events, her love will not accept her because she is a demon. He kills her brother and turns on Hidimbi. However, a god intervenes and forces the man to marry Hidimbi. He then leaves her after giving birth to his son. In my version of the story, Hidimbi will turn back into her demon form and kill the man out of revenge.

This week, I will continue to research this topic.

  • Hidimbi's son, Ghatotkacha, plays an important role in the story of the Pandava brothers in the Mahabharata.
  • This version of Hidimbi's story makes it seem like her husband is a dutiful warrior rather than a cold-hearted man when he leaves his wife and his son.
    • This is contrasted to the wikipedia article for Hidimbi which paints Bhima as a cruel man who leaves her heartbroken
  • Hidimbi asks her son to bring her humans to eat
    • Because of this, a fight breaks out between father and son (Bhima and Ghatokacha) and Hidimbi reveals to G who his father is
    • Bhima embraces his son but then denounces him because G and his mother eat humans
  • I found this video: The Story of Hidimbi
  • Also this narrative of the story: Hidimbi
3 Story Ideas:

1. Hidimbi meets Bhima and falls in love with him. In this story, Hidimbi's demon brother will force Hidimbi to be bait for the traveling Pandava brothers. Hidimbi will see Bhima and fall in love with him. She will have to decide if she will save her brother, or allow Bhima to kill him.

2. Bhima reluctantly marries Hidimbi. This will be a kind of sad installment about unrequited love. In this story, Hidimbi will have a son.

3. Bhima leaves Hidimbi. She is so angry that she raises her son to be a human-eater and to resent the Pandavas. At last when father and son meet, they wrestle and Bhima is bested. Ghatotkacha is about to kill his father when Hidimbi stops it. She still has love in her heart for Bhima.

4. Hidimbi dies of a broken heart. Ghatotkacha is angry because of his mother's death and blames the Pandavas. In the Kurukshetra war, he sides with the Kaurava's and crushes thousands of soldiers. The story will end with one of the gods (maybe brahma) appearing to Bhima and telling him that because of his betrayal to Gatotkacha's mother, the war played out in contrast to its original plan.
