Introduction to a "Foodie"
Hi, my name is Haley.
Here's the serious stuff:
This is me at the Sequoia National Park in CA this summer |
I am a senior studying Biology with a minor in Religious Studies. I really love learning and Biology allows me to use more analytical parts of my brain while Religious Studies allows for some creativity. Together, I believe these two areas of study provide a well-rounded balance of coursework that keeps me busy and engaged. That being said, my favorite learning experiences in college haven't come from classes, they've come from my involvement with the Ronnie K. Irani Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth. This is an internship program that uses problem-solving tactics to consult with companies around the country. This internship has taught me professionalism and how to work with a team. This summer I had the opportunity to work with Nalco Champion as an Engineering & Sales intern! I had a blast and was able to spend my summer in California.
Here's (maybe) some fun stuff:

This semester I only have classes Tuesday and Thursday so I'm looking to ball out. I love to cook and I aspire to be that coworker in the office who brings the best homemade goods to potluck office parties. I love to cook fish and chicken and have recently discovered a dill/lemon sauce that will make any salmon the talk of the town. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I own 7 different kinds of mustards and my roommates make fun of me for it. BUT, in my defense, you can't use plain yellow mustard when a sandwich is screaming for grey poupon. I'm an Aquarius, but I don't act like one so horoscopes are always disappointing for me.
And now for a few favorites:
My favorite movie comes in a series of eight and you've guessed it--- it's Harry Potter. However, my favorite book is Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison (sorry JK Rowling but your imagery and depth of language has nothing on Ellison). My favorite color is purple, but lately I've really been vibing with olive green. My favorite way to spend a Saturday would be to go to brunch in Midtown OKC and then spend the day at the zoo and get ice cream afterwards.
If I had to pick a spirt animal I would pick a moose.
SO that's me in a nutshell.

it is always nice to meet people again in a new semester, Haley! And I had forgotten about your great major/minor combination. That Religious Studies major is one of the best things about OU in my opinion; they didn't have that when I first came here in 1999, and it is a wonderful addition to the academic options. And CCEW is another one of OU's amazing new creations in recent years. I see the internships and projects that get shared by CCEW at Twitter, and it all looks so cool! About food: the food cultures (plural!) of India are totally fascinating, and very unusual too: Scientists have figured out what makes Indian food so delicious. Maybe you will want to do some food-themed stories or a food Storybook this semester! :-)
ReplyDeleteHey Haley!
ReplyDeleteI would like to say that you have included a lot of great photos! And it seems like you know what you are doing when it comes to cooking. I also like to cook (or I should say attempt to cook), I typically burn the food or myself... Also, I may have to get that dill/lemon recipe from you! Good luck with your semester!
Hey Haley, I'm Nicole or Neko as my google name appears. Your major and minor combo are interesting topics, what are your goals for after graduation? What is your favorite type of food to cook and eat? I would also like to consider myself a foodie so this topic brings me much joy. Speaking of which, if you're ever in midtown brunching it up feel free to give me a shout, I live in brick town!
ReplyDeleteHi Haley,
ReplyDeleteI just want to begin with your pictures. They look fantastic and makes me want to go visit! I see that you love cooking, I just got myself into cooking and hope to get better at it. I would definitely want to be your co-worker, because who doesn't love food?! I never actually got the brunch hype, because I just feel like every restaurant over prices their food and it's only SEMI good.. perhaps you could suggest some?! Anyways, have a great experiences with the rest of what this class holds for us!
Hi Haley! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your introduction. I have never met someone who is studying Biology and Religious Studies. And I agree, biology doesn't really leave much room for creativity. I finally have a more relaxed semester as well and have tried to learn to cook. It has not gone well... I was trying to cook tilapia in a pan with only butter and the smoke set off the smoke detectors. I had to go borrow a ladder to shut them off. But, I will get better and you will too, even though it seems like you're already quite the chef. Hope you have some fun with a lighter schedule this semester!
ReplyDeleteHey Haley! You're right about Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, and I am inclined to agree he has JK Rowling beat! It sounds like you have lots of different and unique interests, which should make for an interesting time. It sounds like you are a creative person with a deep understanding of Mustard Protocol (I agree on its importance), so I am pretty excited to read some of your stories this semester. Biology may sound like it lacks area for creativity, but I am sure the information you are learning in those classes can help when you are writing your stories. You never know when understanding how human biology can be helpful!
ReplyDeleteHi Haley,
ReplyDeleteReading your introduction, I’m struck by how cool and unique your major/minor combo is, the commitment to food goodness required to house seven types of mustard, and your beautiful use of vibing as a verb (I love it! Somewhere I have a gif of Jeff Goldblum doing a Thor interview and saying “I’ll start peppering that into my conversations immediately”). Congratulations on your internship (and on such an enviously flexible semester schedule)! I’m grateful to have learned today what grey poupon is, and I totally relate on the not-relating to horoscopes (I definitely don’t identify with Scorpio stuff 90% of the time). Thanks so much for sharing about yourself and also the gorgeous photos- it looks like it was an incredible trip!

Hi Haley! My name's Ethan!
ReplyDeleteI definitely get what you're talking about with that balance of analytical and creative thinking. I was actually planning on being an Astrophysics major and Philosophy minor when I first got to college. I ended up majoring in Astrophysics first and then switching to Philosophy. I love Harry Potter as well and am somewhat of a nerd when it comes to fantasy and Sci-Fi movies. I love Marvel movies as well.
Hey Haley! I’m Deborah, and I’m a senior as well! I feel like you’re really well rounded – major in Bio, minor in Religious Studies, and then an Engineering and Sales intern! Also, I don’t know if you’ve watch Fresh Prince of Bel-Air before, but your grey poupon statement reminded me of that. I can’t relate because I hate mustard, but I choose to believe you that it’s necessary to have 7 different types. Anyway, best of luck this semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Haley!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your introduction and getting to know you. Your pictures of Cali are so beautiful and seemed like you had a great time. I can't wait to visit there one day. Also, I think it's so funny you have so many different types of mustards, but I totally get you because I don't like plain mustard. It's just boring. I'm so jealous of your schedule because I have class every day, but I hope your semester goes well!
Hello Haley! I am a foodie myself so that is awesome! Cooking and baking are how I destress and it seriously always helps. California is where I intend to move to once I have a career going so it is so cool you got to spend the summer there! I went for my birthday weekend and I did not want to comeback.
ReplyDeleteHi Haley, nice to meet you! You're right; those do seem like a very good mixture of studies. You get to work out both parts of your brain. I LOVE Harry Potter and make my family watch the movies every time we are all together. It's cool that you love food so much. Caring about the food you eat is so vital for your health (plus its fun to get creative with it). Food is medicine! I really enjoyed reading your introduction. Have a great day!

ReplyDeleteHi Haley
Thats is awesome how you got the opportunity to work as an intern, that is for sure the best thing to do in college. You learn the most in a real world environment. California is so beautiful, and getting to live there and work there seems like a amazing opportunity. You seem like a big foodie haha, there is so much different types of food to try in the world. It all taste so good. I am looking forward to reading your stories.
Hi Haley. I enjoyed reading through your introduction! I think it is super cool that you are a biology major. I am, too! Also, I am sure religious studies requires much more creativity than your biology classes, so it is good to combine the two. That is so awesome that you only have class two days a week. Best of luck this semester!
ReplyDeleteHey Haley!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your introduction. It is great that you have found a balance of classes that you enjoy! I really enjoyed the photos you included because it has been such a long time since I have been to California. I enjoy cooking too!... when it actually comes out like it is supposed to. Good luck with this semester and don’t get too overwhelmed with those two days of classes!
Hey Haley! Super random, but I saw that you like brunch in midtown and so I wanted to suggest that you go to The Press if you've never been because it's great! I love the fact that your two areas of study allow you to interact with the world and with people on both such a microscopic and macroscopic way. If I was ever working in a position where I needed to hire a biologist that solely had to work in a lab all day, I would still 100% choose to hire someone who can see their work beyond just the field of biology and see how their work contributes to the bigger picture of humanity. I bet that as a religious studies minor, you have gained a much higher appreciation for your work in science than you would have otherwise!
ReplyDeleteHi Haley!
ReplyDeleteI am impressed about you majoring in biology. Have you started job hunting? I am also a foodie. Since you like dill you should try my veggie dill dip. It is super easy. Mix plain yogurt and sour cream in a bowl. Then add dill (dry or fresh doesn't matter), salt, pepper, and onion powder. All of this is to taste, so there is no exact amount, just your personal preference. I like it best with tomatoes. Yummy!
Hi Haley! You seem to have a lot of different interests which is awesome! Your experience sounds awesome, i know my internships i have had in the past are super helpful and have taught me so much. I am also a huge foodie, getting brunch in okc is seriously the best, right now my favorite place is Packards but that changes pretty often. Best of luck with your semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Haley! I wish I was a foodie, but I will literally eat anything. What's your favorite thing to cook? Also, so cool that you got to spend your summer in California! You took some really great pictures. I haven't read the Invisible Man, but it seems like I should! Also, I don' have class Tuesday or Thursday and I love it! I imagine having a two day week is even better. Hoping this semester is treating you well!
ReplyDeleteHey there Haley! Please tell me why we are so similar? I am also an Aquarius, I love cooking, and my major is Religious Studies, but I am also a bio minor and pre-med! It is such a great combination because our minds are stimulated in so many ways in all of our classes, and don't just stick to one topic. Oh, and not to mention I am a Harry Potter fanatic, and in fact I went to harry Potter World for my graduation trip when I was a senior in high school! Thanks for sharing who you are and it is so cool to see someone who I can totally relate to! (PS. if you are ever tired of the citrus on salmon, try a creamy béchamel sauce just to mix things up a bit!)
ReplyDeleteHi Haley! It’s great to know more about you from your introduction post. It’s so awesome that you had the opportunity to travel and explore California for your internship! I never been to any parts of the city in California, but it is definitely in my bucket list. Overall, I want to keep this short and wish you the best of luck for your success in life!
ReplyDeleteHi Haley! I think your major and minor is an interesting combination. They all must be challenging in different ways. I think that economic center is an important institution, and it’s great that you’ve learned professionalism in the organization. Dill and lemon sauced salmon sounds really yummy. I like salmon and that recipe sounds tasty. I like the food philosophy of yours. I agree with the screaming sandwich; yellow mustard should be used conservatively. It’s nice to meet you Haley!
ReplyDeleteHi Haley! I love the reasoning you gave for your choice of major and minor. I agree that that is a very well-rounded balance of coursework. I think you're so lucky that you only have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays! I have tried every semester to make my schedule like that but it never works out. I think it's always these big lecture science classes that are MWF that prevent me from having that kind of schedule. Good luck on the rest of the semester!
ReplyDeleteHey Haley,
ReplyDeleteYour major and minor are not usually things that you think go together, but I love how you decided to choose both of them. Each has to be challenging and interesting in their respective ways. It is cool that you were able to go explore California during your internship, I love getting to go travel around.
Hi Haley!
ReplyDeleteThat is a very unique major and minor I would say. I took an Ancient Medieval Religious Philosophy class last semester which I was able to make a good grade in but boy was most of that over my head. I had not taken any philosophy classes in college until I enrolled in that class so it was kind of a trial by fire situation but it was extremely interesting! I cook every once in awhile but it's usually steaks and chicken. I think Midtown has some great restaurants and I'd love to hear about some of the ones you think are the best!? Hope you have a great semester.
Hi Haley! It sounds like the internship program you went through was really fun and helpful. It’s also awesome that you love to cook. I enjoy cooking myself, but I have trouble finding the time to do it. I still love a wide variety of foods and will try just about any restaurant, especially those that look different or atypical compared to places that most people eat at. It’s great that you’ve had a lighter class schedule this semester, I hope it has been going well!
ReplyDeleteHi Haley! I am also a senior studying Biology, so I know the feeling of the last few semesters. Life gets a bit crazy when it comes to trying to graduate on time, but the higher level Biology classes are so interesting! I was also excited to hear that you're interested in religious studies. I've been curious for a while what that looks like here at OU. I've taken a lot of religion classes, but none here. Also, your description of the lemon sauce is making me hungry! I'd love the recipe if you wouldn't mind sending it my way? My email address is yates4401@ou.edu. I hope the rest of this semester treats you well!
ReplyDeleteHi Haley!
ReplyDeleteSo I love midtown too and if you have been doing brunch there, you have eaten at Waffle champion, right? It is one of my favorite restaurants in OKC and if you haven’t gone it is amazing. It is also down the street from my favorite place on earth, aka Commonplace Books, and Commonplace has a kitchen open now too. I really recommend both for a cool place with great food.
